Rejuvenation of Niru : an integrated subsurface re-interpretation

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 34th Ann. Conv., 2010

The Niru field located in South Sumatra was discovered in 1949 by BPM. This development of the field commenced in 1953 and the field reached peak production of 6000 BOPD in 1958. Water injection started in 2001 with a peripheral pattern, consisting of 9 injection wells and 12 producing / monitor wells. The injection, however, did not give any significant results, because reservoir pressure remained the same and no increase in production rate. The upper structure of Niru has relatively high water cut (85 - 95%), and predicted to have no hydraulic communication with the northern flank. It is proven by two Niru wells on the north flank with water cut is of 8-11 %, although there are injection wells in the surrounding Bubble map of cumulative production, indicates the drainage radius of the 2 wells has exceeded the average drainage of production wells in Limau. This suggests the presence of a large reservoir with a widespread Oil Down To. The concept of Sequence Stratigraphy is used to explain this condition. The lower part of reservoirs to layer X0 were deposited in fluvial or distributary channels environments. Then deposition layer W3 to lower BRF changed into alternating intervals deltaic distributary of mouth bar, delta front and gradually changed into shallow marine. The first step out drilling (NR-1) commenced on the north flank in 2006, recording significant production of 1200 BOPD, gas of 500 MSCFD, and WC of 1%. Reservoir simulation results yielded additional reserves of 23 MMBO with 18 production a planned total of and 2 water injection wells. So far, 12 wells have been drilled. Oil production increased significantly to 11500 BOPD from the previously 1542.9 BOPD. The increase of production should be immediately accompanied by the addition of production facilities to avoid problem in storing, processing and shipping. Second stage rejuvenation of the Niru field is the revitalization of the production facilities and the extension of Sequence Stratigraphy application on the other neighbouring structures as well as upside potential.
