Pertamina Cooperates with Partners from Japan, South Korea and the UAE to Boost Carbon Emission Reduction

PT Pertamina (Persero) signed a cooperation to discuss, explore, and energy transition initiatives with several partners, including Mubadala Energy, POSCO INTERNATIONAL, Japex, and Jogmec. The signing was carried out on the sidelines of the IPA Convex 2023, Tuesday 25 July 2023.

These companies intend to explore cooperation in the context of research and development of low-carbon product technologies and its implementation, particularly those related to Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS) and Carbon Capture, Utilization & Storage (CCUS), Blue Hydrogen/Ammonia, New and Renewable Energy (NRE), as well as other potential related collaborations in Indonesia.

Nicke Widyawati, President Director of PT Pertamina (Persero), said that the energy sector is projected to be the sector that contributes the largest emissions in Indonesia; it is expected to have a significant contribution in reducing carbon emissions, after the forestry sector and other land uses. According to her, this time the signing is an important milestone in PT Pertamina (Persero)’s efforts to support the Government's steps in realizing Indonesia's Net Zero Emission (NZE) target in 2060 or sooner.

"This is a strategic signing for the achievement of the NZE and is a game changer for Indonesia in relation to the target of reducing carbon emissions by 2060. The development of renewable energy alone is not enough as fossil energy is still needed until 2060, even with a reduced portion. Therefore, there needs to be an initiative that is negative carbon," said Nicke.

Based on data from PT Pertamina (Persero), Indonesia's per capita emissions are currently below the world's average per capita CO2 emissions (under 3 tons per person). Meanwhile, Indonesia has the potential of an Integrated cluster for end-to-end CCUS and is innovating as a provider of green energy in that cluster. Based on several studies that have been conducted, the potential CO2 storage capacity reaches 80 to 400 gigatonnes of CO2 in depleted reservoirs and saline aquifers.

"Alhamdulilah, Indonesia has quite a large storage capacity of i 400 gigatonnes. Several countries and industries are interested in working with Pertamina, especially as we have successfully carried out CCUS in Jatibarang with a partner from Japan and the results are good and now our second project is in Sukowati", said Nicke.

Salyadi Saputra, Director of Portfolio Strategy and Business Development at Pertamina, said Indonesia has a very large CO2 storage capacity hence decarbonization projects in Indonesia will also make a significant contribution to reducing world emissions.

Another unique proposition is the large tropical rain forests, peatlands and mangrove forests which have the potential to store up to 300 billion tons of CO2, making Indonesia the country with the 2nd largest potential for nature-based solutions to solving emissions problems. Finally, the abundance of new and renewable energy that has the potential to generate around 3600 GW in Indonesia will also contribute to global decarbonization, originating from various sources including geothermal (24 GW) wind (155 GW), solar (3300 GW), bioenergy (57 GW), water (95 GW) and sea (60 GW).

"Indonesia will have a significant role, not only for Asia but also for the world," said Salyadi.(*)
