An innovatitve single completion design with Y block and electrical submersible pump for multiple reservoirs

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 16th Ann. Conv., 1987

This paper describes an effective well completion program initiated in Atlantic Richfield Indonesia Inc. (ARII) three most recently developed fields in the Northwest Java Sea. Since these fields are comprised of many reservoirs, in order to obtain optimum production and operational flexibility at minimal cost, an innovative downhole completion system has been implemented.Depending on the number of reservoirs per well, as many as five seal bore retrievable packers have been set in a well and then individually tested ensuring isolation. This system allows for: 1) selective perforating of different reservoirs, 2) isolating, acidizing, testing and monitoring of separate zones, 3) producing a well by natural flow initially or by pump (ESP), 4) commingling of zones, 5) running pressure surveys and production logging, 6) manipulating/ eliminating water/gas producing zone(s), 7) servicing the pump as required without fluid loss to the formation, and 8) protecting the downhole equipment from corrosive gases by continuous inhibition. Major downhole work is performed inexpensively by wireline and/or snubbing units. After well completion, three different reservoir lithologies (sandstone, limestone, and metamorphic) have been isolated, stimulated, tested, monitored and selectively produced. To date, more than 50 oil wells with as many as three different lithologies and as many as 20 separate formations have been successfully completed. There is potential to complete about 20 more platforms (6-9 wells/ platform) with this system. This innovative completion system allows ARII to optionally, produce multiple-reservoir fields at minimal cost.
