Crane-Based Well Service (CBWS) has been proven as an alternative system to perform a well service or workover operation (Andika, S.M.K. et al., 2023). An earlier version of the CBWS system relied on a crane as a hoisting or pulling unit.
The addition of a hydraulic jack unit to the system has improved its pulling capabilities by overcoming some of its work limitations. This hydraulic jack application allows the Company to perform an overpull of up to 80,000 lbs (the maximum working load), and it is equipped with a bearing that allows manual rotation of the workstring while suspending a weight of up to 112,000 lbs.
The unit was designed specifically for the Company to release and retrieve a 7” mechanical set and a hydraulic-set packer(s) by using the CBWS system. The equipment was built with an integrated working platform and a control panel to simplify the operation.
The CBWS campaign with the hydraulic jack was conducted in March 2023 to retrieve a mechanical set packer in the Budi-8 well and multiple hydraulic set packers in the Budi-11 and Budi-12 wells. The operation has successfully recovered all the packers except for the second and third hydraulic-set packers in the Budi-11 well. All operations were completed in 10 days with a 12-hour operation and a cost savings of 67% from the approved budget.
The high demand for well intervention equipment opens up opportunities for the CBWS system with hydraulic jack to be utilized in other fields for some particular task that previously could only be done using a workover rig, snubbing unit, or hydraulic workover unit (HWU).
