Application of lean six sigma results in improved acid stimulation oil gains in Duri heavy oil field

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 31st Ann. Conv., 2007
Chevron Pacific Indonesia has performed hundreds acid stimulation jobs since 2000. Acid stimulation successfully removes scale in the wellbore and significantly contributes to Duri oil production performance. Unfortunately the failure rate has been high, with 44% of the jobs executed in 2000- 2004 only resulting in less than 10 BOPD oil gain. This paper highlights the Lean Sigma application as a means to improve the acid stimulation performance, discusses the technical aspects of the statistical analysis, field execution and post treatment result. Comprehensive technical review and simple statistical analysis were performed, which covered the identification of scaling problem in the wellbore, mechanical pump evaluation and pattern production-injection performance review.Since the Lean Sigma approach was implemented in January 2005, 44 acid jobs were performed up to June 2006 and the success ratio increased to 86%. The financial benefit gained by this improvement is calculated at US$1.3 MM/year.
