Banyu Urip oil field development project – socioeconomic issues and challenges

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 39th Ann. Conv., 2015

Social issues cover the range of impacts (positive and negative) that a project may have on the social environment and vice versa. The social environment encompasses local people (including their norms, values, beliefs and the way in which they live and interact with each other), their communities, their environment and their economy. Types of social impacts also vary depending on location of the project components and the type of social environment setting, such as offshore/onshore. Therefore, in managing the social issues successfully, it requires both leadership and commitment by management and the involvement of a broad cross-section of individuals and groups throughout a company. To support the Banyu Urip Oil Field Development Project which is geographically located in a densely populated area in Bojonegoro regency, East Java, understanding and managing social issues is one of the project’s challenges. If these issues could not be addressed in timely manner, it could directly impact the project schedule. The paper will discuss and share our experiences in managing community socioeconomic issues during the development phase of Banyu Urip Project activities. Keywords: Onshore Oil Field Development, Socioeconomic Management.
