The Bentayan Field in Asameras South Sumatra Corridor Block was discovered by BPM (Shell) in 1932. Thirteen wells were drilled by various operators in the period following discovery by Bentayan No. 1 . Until recently (October, 1985) the field was undeveloped due to adverse crude properties (gravity 22O API, pour point 1 1 5 O F), low estimated recovery efficiency (9.3% of O.O.I.P.), and the remote location with difficult access.In 1982, Pertamina approved Asamera (South Sumatra) Ltd .s development proposal.A unique production and crude oil blending system was selected. The method utilizes a low pour point blend crude as a downhole blending medium and power fluid through the use of jet pumps and associated facilities. This allows for production at the wellhead of a refineryready, pipeline quality product, without pipeline heat tracing or slurry manufacture and pumping equipment.This paper presents an overview of the Bentayan production project, including reservoir data, well preparation and facilities design. It emphasizes the unique production methods and complex operations required for the first successful production of this field more than fifty years after its discovery.
