Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 41st Ann. Conv., 2017
The increasing use of non-linear loads in electrical installations has exacerbated the problems of harmonic distortion in industrial and commercial electrical systems. Non-linier loads widely used in oil and gas operation are variable speed drive (VSD) and uninterruptible power supply (UPS).
PT Medco E&P Indonesia is utilizing Electrical Submersible Pump (ESP) as one of artificial lift method applied in Kaji Semoga Field. Most of ESP utilizes VSD for its motor starter and speed controller in order to achieve required production rate from reservoir.
VSD operation itself generates harmonic interference which may disturb power system such as electrical equipment overheating, premature failure of rotating equipment, false tripping of circuit breakers. Commonly to eliminate such problem, harmonic filter is installed to compensate harmonic distortion. Harmonic Filter installation contributes a significant cost in maintaining power system reliability in Kaji Semoga field.
This paper outlines alternative methods available to control harmonic distortion in power distribution system as an alternative of installing harmonic filter. The methods to control harmonic distortion include reconfiguring windings, phase shifting and resizing of transformers. Other method to overcome harmonic distortion is sizing of line conductors for protection against overload currents, taking into account the harmonic content of the load that are under harmonic influences.
These alternatives methods can reduce cost of eliminating harmonic distortion significantly.
