Facies study of the offshore Mahakam area
Year: 1973
Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 2nd Ann. Conv., 1973
Geological and micropaleontological examination of 16 exploratory wells drilled so far around the recent Mahakam delta, has led to recognition of an ancient extensive delta system with several hydrocarbon bearing reservoirs. As far as explored by the drill, this delta system is of the high constructive type with two minor destructive phases. It prograded eastwards from middle Miocene times and reached its biggest extension during late Miocene to early Pliocene. The delta was bordered to the south and the north by carbonate sediments and limited to the open sea by barrier reefs. Data at hand suggest that gas and condensate is produced from distal deltafront sands whereas oil appears to occur in sands deposited between the supralittoral deltaic plain and the deltafront.
