First Implementation of Hybrid Fiber Optic Cable in Indonesia – Carbon Reduction through Leading-Edge Technology

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 47th Ann. Conv., 2023

The new technology for acquiring Vertical Seismic Profiling (VSP) survey using a distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) measurement is very beneficial in reducing the time and cost of operations and increasing the value of VSP surveys. The hybrid fiber optic cable is embedded inside the wireline cable, and hence VSP survey can now be acquired with any wireline run, making it transparent to rig hours. The first implementation of this new technology in Indonesia aims to see significant values in operational effectiveness and an impact on data quality. Walkabove VSP was acquired in the East Kalimantan deep-water well to obtain a velocity profile and VSP image below the well. As the operational cost has been the primary concern, hybrid fiber optic cable is acquired to achieve time efficiency. The technology uses a complete solution as an end-to-end workflow for implementing the technology: 1.) Planning workflow that uses the presurvey modeling; 2) Execution workflow during field acquisition and the real-time Edge Workflow to optimize the signal-to-noise ratio and mitigate ringing at the well site; and 3.) Processing workflow, in which additional seismic preprocessing workflow was adapted to remove the unwanted noise from the hybrid fiber optic VSP data. Implementing hybrid fiber optic cable technology significantly improves operational effectiveness and data quality. High-frequency VSP data and robust well-to-seismic tie make the DAS technology attractive for VSP acquisition. This leading-edge technology makes this the first implementation in Indonesia, a breakthrough for the future of VSP acquisition technology.
