Identification of Candidates for Application of Solid Deposition Treatment Technology (SDTT) for Malaysian Oilfields - Methodology and Challenges

Solid deposition in wells is generally associated with organic material such as paraffin and asphaltene, inorganic scale, corrosion, and inert particles such as sand, silt, clay and erosion products. A technology has been developed to combat solid deposits consisting predominantly of organic material with traces of inorganic scales and inert particles. This paper will share some methodologies used by the authors in the identification of candidate wells with organic solid deposition problems. The results of the study are the precursors for application in the Solid Deposition Treatment Technology (SDTT), developed by the authors’ client. Its objective is to mitigate formation damage associated with solids deposition. A good strategy is to develop wax and asphaltene models that allow engineers to perform a variety of tasks from the screening of potential problems and appropriate remediation. The screening analysis comprises data collection, quick wells screening, nodal analysis, wax and asphaltene modeling, technical evaluation and reporting. The challenges involved in the pre-treatment analysis include vague conclusion of nodal analysis, uncertain factor of formation damage, and deficiency of field data to produce accurate models. Thus, critical strategies are required to overcome the challenges and to better identify well candidates.
