Improving Bunyu Field Drilling Performance with Comprehensive Wellbore Stability Maintenance Strategy and Optimized Drilling Practices

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 47th Ann. Conv., 2023

The BP2-18 well in Bunyu was successfully drilled to 8-1/2” hole section well TD at 2681 m MD in 15.3 days and successfully cemented with a 7” casing liner in only 19.5 total days. It was put on production 16 days faster than AFE duration with a total cost of 25% below original AFE budget despite 1 day NPT due to rig and logging tools problems. Region-3 Zona-10 Pertamina Upstream Drilling team has successfully reduced the number of wiper trips usually performed before running PT/FA logging and before running casings on both 12-1/4” x 9-5/8” phase and 8-1/2” x 7” phase. The wiper trips could be eliminated because the Bunyu Drilling team enhanced the well borehole stability conditions while drilling the open hole and pulling out the BHA. A comprehensive geomechanics study and recommendations have been implemented by carefully applying the Mud Weight increment schedule program while also performing best drilling practices to smoothen the borehole wall quality and improve hole cleaning. Wellbore strengthening practices using mud bridging material have been consistently implemented, resulting in several successful efforts to avoid lost circulation problems previously encountered in the offset wells drilled in the Bunyu and Tarakan area of Zona-10, Pertamina Upstream. All improvement aspects that have been gradually applied during drilling operation in Bunyu Field will be discussed thoroughly in this paper.
