Integrated reservoir study leads to 100% success of infill drilling

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 38th Ann. Conv., 2014
Finding bypassed oil is not easy in a field already producing for 20 years. The M oil field is located on the eastern side of Padang Island, Riau Province in Sumatra. The field covers approximately 3000 acres. Reservoirs are unconsolidated shaly sands with dispersed clay content. There are two major two oil zones and two minor gas zones.
Facing declining oil production, a major integrated reservoir study was conducted in 2008-2009.
This paper analyzes the importance of an integrated reservoir study workflow to incorporate geoscience and reservoir engineering data and analyses. The geological part mainly will explain the description of the sand-shale formations and, then how to model and distribute properties within the 3D geological model. Reservoir engineering aspects are discussed concerning the integration of production data analysis to assist the geological model development, leading to realistic production forecasts.
This study dramatically improved the understanding of this field, and identified potential infill drilling locations. Infill drilling commenced in 2010-2012. So far, 11 wells have been drilled with a 100% success rate with incremental oil recovery of around 100 MSTB/well.
