Lithology identification using amplitude variations with offset: examples from South Sumatra

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 15th Ann. Conv., 1986

This paper describes the use of a relatively new exploration technique in the modeling and interpretation of seismic data. The technique holcls promise for identification of primary lithology and of local lithological facies variations. Its underlying principle is that any single reflection within a CDP gather will show an amplitude variation between near and far offset traces. Given certain physical properties of rocks across the reflecting boundary, stacking velocity information above the reflector, and the CDP geometry, it is possible to model the observed amplitude variation. Such modeling can result in usful information on lithology. Two examples will be sh~own of the application of this technique in the detection of porosity in Miocene reefal buildups in South Sumatra.
