Methodology for selecting best infill well candidates in a mature pattern steam flood

A process is described wherein the best and most logical infill locations were found through the integrated use of a variety of data collected in several areas of the Duri Steam Flood (DSF). The patterns identified in the initial screening process were found, after detailed analysis, to have operational characteristics consistent with the need for additional wells.Pattern averaged contour maps were generated for OOIP, Recovery Efficiency, Pore Volume Steam Injection, and Current Oil Saturation. From these maps, those patterns and areas with lower recovery efficiency, high current oil saturation, and similar pore volume steam injection were selected for more in depth investigation.Next, details of contour maps of temperature, steam de-saturation from TDT logs, and steam zone location from time lapsed seismic were investigated by flow unit and individual well location within the identified high opportunity areas. Individual well locations without evidence of the presence of steam were selected.Pattern averaged calculations were done to compare the groups of patterns in which we were proposing to supply infill wells with those that were not. In both cases, pattern recovery efficiency was substantially less in the patterns to be infilled, while production performance per well was the same, on average. The patterns to be infilled contained fewer effective wells on average than those patterns not in the candidate list. This indicated the need to infill the patterns. Analysis of previously mature areas (1,3) was analyzed for initial rate, decline, and response to steam ramp down. These results were incorporated in the forecast of individual well performance predictions.
