New Geochronology Data from Eastern Indonesia – An Aid to Understanding Sedimentary Provenance in a Frontier Region
Year: 2017
Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 41st Ann. Conv., 2017
From 2006 to 2013, Black Gold Energy, Niko Asia, and their partner companies, conducted geological field programs throughout eastern Indonesia in support of their oil and gas exploration efforts in the region. One hundred and fifty-one field samples, primarily of sandstones of Mesozoic and Tertiary age were collected for U-Pb dating of detrital zircons and modal analyses of heavy minerals. Where possible, the igneous and metamorphic rocks were also analysed for their zircon ages. The purpose of this study was to confirm the maximum age of the sandstones and to identify their provenance. Our aim was to better constrain the tectonic evolution of this region, and to better understand paleo-drainage basins and the distribution of sands from various cratonic and igneous sources.
