Potential sources of subsurface carbon dioxide (CO2) are reviewed. Mantle degassing, reaction (metamorphic and diagenetic) of carbonates and catagenesis of coals are the most important processes. Geological factors including the distribution of CO2 and hydrocarbon source rocks, seais and traps, as well as basin burial history and structural development all play- a role in determining CO, distribubon and concentration and a detailed knowledge of these is required if accurate prediction of CO, is to be achieved.
