Palynology analysis and coal characterization: a preliminary study for CBM prospectivity of Balikpapan FM., Kutei Basin
Year: 2009
Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 33rd Ann. Conv., 2009
The primary objective of this study is to collect palynological and coal petrographic information to define a preliminary objective of CBM (Coal Bed Methane) prospectivity of Balikpapan Fm., Kutei Basin. The palynology analysis was conducted by using samples of carbonaceous mudstone and shaly coal taken from in different intervals. Palynology analysis of Balikpapan Fm. shows four main palynomorph assemblage characters. Each character represents specific environment and vegetation type. Of the four main characters, two represent upper delta environment and lower delta plain environment as favorable environment for coal deposition. Based on maceral content which was put into petrographic indices, the coal of Balikpapan Fm. was deposited in wet forest swamp area with limnotelmatic - telmatik condition, medium to high level density of tree. Rapid burial condition occured during deposition time but occasional microbial attack also took control. The type of mire is bog and fen which having characters from ombrotrophic (solely rain-fed) to mesotrophic (tending toward ombrotrophic condition). Vitrinite reflectance shows that the coal maturation is considered to be brown coal to sub-bituminous and is situated at the peak stages of biogenic gas generation, while the thermogenic gas generation was at early stages. Based on the result above, its assumed that the coal has a, relatively, thick bed and tend to produce the biogenic gas. This result is useful as a preliminary approach for further exploration of CBM in Kutei Basin, especially since the upper delta and lower delta plain environment provide favorable condition for coal development.
