The development of pinch technology provides a comprehensive and systematic approach toward solving the problems related to energy and the environment. The basic pinch technique concept will be first reviewed in this paper, as well as the scope of application of this technique in an oil refinery. Preliminary study, using pinch techniques to revamp an existing oil refinery in Indonesia, has been carried out and the outline of the study which shows a considerable amount of energy savings will be presented and discussed. Based on analysis of these results, further implementation study to retrofit existing refineries is encouraging.
