Pure Power Optimizes Production: improved Productivity Index (PI) through dynamic Underbalance in Abadi Wells - Masela Block (Inpex),Arafura Sea, Indonesia

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 34th Ann. Conv., 2010

PURE Dynamic underbalanced perforating was applied to the deepwater Abadi-D well after conventional testing in first three wells (Abadi-A, Abadi-B and Abadi-C), located in Masela PSC, Arafura Sea, Indonesia. The skin estimated in two of the wells was on the order of 100 and test results were much less than expected. The purpose of Dynamic underbalanced perforating is to break down the crushed zone created by the perforation jet and create a clean, undamaged perforated tunnel. This lowers the near wellbore pressure loss and increases productivity or injectivity of the reservoir. The technique consistently obtains the maximum effective transient underbalance eliminating or minimizing perforation damage. Software that considers wellbore geometry, gun string selection and reservoir properties was used to design a specific gun string configuration to predict the skin and the productivity increase contributed by the dynamic underbalance design. The design was confirmed by results from the fast pressure recorder incorporated in the firing system run. The job ran smoothly and lead to an increase in the productivity index and the skin was reduced by three fold, proving the benefits of dynamic underbalanced perforating. The impact ofimproving the PI can influence the number of wells required for future field development and a cost benefit occurred by elimination of the well stimulation which was planned for the damaged zone. Dynamic underbalance was implemented as the perforation strategy in the next two wells, Abadi-E and Abadi-F.
