Rehabilitation and development - Tarakan Island
Year: 1973
Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 2nd Ann. Conv., 1973
First, let's locate Tarakan Island for those of you who may not be familiar with this small portion of Indonesia. Tarakan is situated off the northeast coast of Kalimantan, approximately 75 miles south of Tawau, just across the border in Sabah, and about 400 miles north of Balikpapan. A closer view of the island shows it ,to be somewhat pork-chop or maybe I should say lamb-chop shaped about 8 miles wide across the top and 13 miles long. One major oil field has been discovered to date on Tarakan and six other minor areas of oil production have been located. The field that I shall talk about today is Pamusian from which approximately 181,000,000 barrels of oil have been produced from about 1,100 total wells. Pamusian produces or has produced from formations as shallow as 180 feet to as deep as 7,000 feet. However, almost all of the cumulative production has come from zones above 1,800 feet. It is only since early 1972 that commercial oil production has been established below 3,000 feet.
