Resin Job for Rectification of the Micro Channeling Leakage on the Cement Plug Barrier

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 48th Ann. Conv., 2024

The ASAP-1X exploration well was drilled in 2011 and the BEDIDI DEEP-1X exploration well was drilled in 2015. During its journey, it was monitored for pressure emerging from the wellheads of the two exploration wells. This is possible due to gas migration from the formation which managed to penetrate the cement layer on the outside of the casing and between the casings. To prevent the gas migration from getting bigger and becoming dangerous, efforts have been made to carry out isolation to prevent the gas from migrating to the surface.

The method used is to inject epoxy resin with a specific gravity above that of the fluid in the well (completion fluid). The epoxy resin is placed right on top of the cement plug using a macaroni pipe. Previously, the pressure increase at the wellhead was measured over 30 minutes and 12 hours for the PBU process. An injectivity test was also carried out, followed by running a macaroni pipe to determine the depth of the top of the cement, and circulation was carried out to determine the specific gravity of the fluid from inside the well. Epoxy resin with a larger specific gravity is pumped and positioned above the top of the cement. Next, it is closed and pressure is applied for 12 hours so that the epoxy resin can enter to close the gaps in the cement and give the epoxy resin time to harden.

From the cement plug rectification process for these two exploration wells, significant results were obtained. The BEDIDI DEEP-1X well initially showed a WHP of 1113 psi, after being bled the pressure rose again to 164 psi for 12 hours and an injectivity rate of 1.6 liters/hour. After injecting the epoxy resin, the result was pressure = 0 psi, no injectivity rate and negative test showed = 0 psi. The Asap-1x Well initially showed a WHP of 650 psi, after the bleed-off pressure was 0 psi for 12 hours and the injectivity rate was 0.6 L/hour. After injecting the epoxy resin, the result was pressure = 0 psi, no injectivity rate and negative test showed = 0 psi.

The use of epoxy resin to carry out cement plug rectification is very effective in providing good sealing against gas migration that passes through the cement plug layer. The process of using
epoxy resin is very efficient, less time and less cost (rig less). Can be applied to wells that have quite large gas migration by carrying out a stripping process. Equipment for running macaroni pipes is also equipped with a BOP which allows a stripping process to be carried out to position the epoxy resin at the base so that it can provide good insulation.
