Drilling 8-1/2" directional section in main zone wells which are 3500 to 4000-meter true vertical depth (TVD), is proven to be very challenging to maintain the trajectory, particularly while drilling started at 1900 mTVD. Offset well data analysis shows that directionally drilling at 1900 mTVD, the directional tool steering efficiency mostly decreasing & requires control drilling parameters to maintain trajectory as per plan. This situation leads into reduced overall rate of penetration (ROP) performance of the section. Conventionally, Rotary Steerable System PowerDrive* (RSS PD) X6 is used to drill this section. It uses push-the-bit mechanism with hydraulically activated pads that continuously push against the formation to generate the required steering rates. RSS PD Orbit is deployed to tackle the challenge in the main zone well with typical building profile. The enhanced push-the-bit system with improved steering unit design is providing higher pad force to the formation, generates higher build rate & better trajectory control, hence the performance can be pushed further. Excellent trajectory control at the building section without controlling any drilling parameters resulted a step change in ROP performance. During the tangent section, the tool also managed to maintain the angle with low steering ratio 20-50%. RSS PD Orbit takes the drilling performance to the next level with high confident & efficiently. Several records are achieved with RSS PD Orbit. Fastest 8- on bottom ROP for wells with building profile & 3rd highest among all swamp Tunu, Tambora and Handil (TTH) Fields. It also sets new 8-o n bottom ROP record in Handil Field & for the first time managed to place it among the top Tunu well performers.
