A regional sequence stratigraphic study has been undertaken of the Upper Jurassic to Mid Cretaceous interval of the Middle Indus Basin of Pakistan and surrounding areas. The main focus of the study is on the recent hydrocarbon discoveries that have been made in the sandstones of the "Lower Goru" and Sembar Formations of the Middle Indus Basin. Correlation is also made with the better known development of the Lower Goru-Sembar play in the Lower Indus Basin, with the age equivalent Chichali and Lumshiwal Formations of the Punjab Platform to the north and with the "Lower Goru", Pariwar, Baisakhi and Bhadasar Formations of Rajasthan (India) to the east. Lithostratigraphic based correlations have been inconsistently applied within the region, especially with regard to the identification of the sand prone "Lower Goru" and Sembar Formations. This, coupled with the use of different lithostratigraphic terms in different subbasins. has, to date, hindered the understanding of the regional development of the play. The application of sequence stratigraphic principles to the area has highlighted these problems and provided a new understanding of the regional distribution of the most important sequences and the controls on their development.
