In oil and gas installation, storage tank is not only store the liquid product but also store energy associated with the liquid product. The energy can be release during accident escalate to fire and explosion for example buncefield accident. Energy of Buncefield tank fire accident is 200 times bigger than fat man atomic bomb dropped in Nagasaki. The biggest financial loss are outside the vicinity almost £1 billion compare to inside the vicinity only £70 million. In the last 50 years, it is more than 240 accident related to storage tank accident. 85% of the accident is the fire and explosion. Indonesia has experience several storage tank fire and explosion such as Plumpang depots, Cilacap refineries. Senipah Peciko south Mahakam (SPS) sites Total E&P Indonesie tank farm area has 6 (six) floating roof storage tank, five tanks with 500.000 barrels capacity and one tank with 100.000 barrels capacity. Total E&P Indonesie (TEPI) SPS sites has improved equipment and installation to prevent any fire in the storage tank such as earth bonding, lightning protector, secondary rim seal and cope if there is a fire start from rim seal fire to full surface such as new rim seal system, new foam truck, High Capacity canon monitor. This improvement is considering the quantity of energy associated with liquid product in storage tank and recommendation from previous storage tank accident. Despite of many challenges in term of budget and technical issues to implement all of those improvements, considering the severity that could be impact not only to the installation itself but also community nearby, all of improvements are worth.
