Study CO2-EOR Injection on Mature Offshore Oilfield East Kalimantan, Indonesia

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 48th Ann. Conv., 2024

The oil and gas industry needs to lower its carbon footprint associated with the production and consumption of hydrocarbons given the effects of CO2 emissions on the environment. One idea often pursued in the upstream sector of the petroleum industry is to align its objective to increase oil recovery while taking part in emission reduction is by reinjection of CO2 for enhanced oil recovery (EOR). This EOR technique involves injecting CO2 into the reservoir at a specific quality/purity level and injection pressure technique.

This paper is intended to share methodology used while developing EOR scenario by CO2 injection. The exercise consists of preliminary design and defining surface facilities needed for realization of CO2-EOR injection project. The outcome of the exercise is a preliminary overview of surface facilities and/or infrastructure required to implement CO2-EOR project. The following facilities will be needed: the CO2 capture plant and compression, pipelines to bring the high pressure gas to injection wells and depending on the distance, a booster-compression station may be also required.

The review includes estimates of capital costs, operating costs for the project and simplified economic analysis. This is input to a comprehensive CO2-EOR screening process.

The full potential for CO2-EOR to increase recovery factors can only be achieved if CO2 supply can be assured for the lifetime of EOR project. Crucial is the identification of CO2 sources that can provide a sustainable CO2 supply over lifetime of the EOR project, considering Pilot Phase to Full Field Scenario.
