Successful Application of Acidizing Scale Removal for Unlocking Reserves and Production Improvement: Case Studies in Peciko
Year: 2019
Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 43rd Ann. Conv., 2019
Peciko is one of the giant gas fields located in Mahakam area, Indonesia. The field has been in production since 1999 and entering into the late stage of its life. The dramatic shifts of production parameters are believed to be the main factor of scale precipitation in Peciko. The scale could impact the optimum potential of the wells due to extra cost for intervention, delay in gas production, faster production decline and loss of access to perforation targets. The appearance of scale problem in Peciko was firstly noticed in 2005, since then it is believed that scale has occurred in more than 50 wells with increasing number with time. Numerous attempts of removing scale, mainly by mechanical treatments, had been performed so far with low success ratio. Post mortem evaluation indicates that the results of these mechanical treatments are largely affected by wellbore configuration and severity of scale. Recognizing the scale chemistry has led to a better understanding in selecting acidizing treatment of scale removal solution in Peciko. The work was started by performing XRD test on scale deposit samples. The tests indicated that scale is mainly composed of calcium carbonate with high solubility in standard HCL acid. In Lab test, several treatments indicate promising solubility with HCl by 95% with a short soaking period of less than 2 minutes reaction rate. Two case studies of acidizing treatment have been successfully carried out with an outstanding results. Regaining full wellbore access without any productivity impairment and unlocking reserves below restrictions are finally accomplished upon treatment with production improvement ranges from 5 to 10 fold of increase on the original productivity. Furthermore, acidizing scale removal has been a game changer and proven cost effective solution in Peciko.
