Successful Implementation of a Gas Utilization TechnologySuccessful implementation of gas technologies in any project environment can be a challenge. To begin, there are the issues surrounding the resource size and composition of the gas reservoirs. Early in the process there may be very little information available in terms of geological and geophysical data, not to mention actual reservoir performance histories.Once the resource has been more or less defined, the evaluation and selection of the appropriate markets and products must be completed. There are a wide range of technologies currently available that may be applicable to different resource sizes and market locations. Chemical processes take good advantage of economies of scale and therefore, the larger the resource base, the more technology/product options become economic. Smaller resource bases have fewer options for monetization and suffer from scale economies. Selecting the right technology is an important decision that constitutes a long term commitment to a product and a market. However, truly successful projects must bring value beyond the economics of the contractors and governments involved. Successful projects must bring value to the communities and populations that are directly or indirectly affected by those projects. Marathon and partners in Equatorial Guinea have kept social responsibility well in focus in the major liquefied natural gas (LNG) development currently in progress on Bioko Island.
