The Impact Of Uncertainty of Aquifer For Giant Gas Reservoir, The Abadi Gas Field

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 36th Ann. Conv., 2012

Since the aquifer strength has a large impact on the production performance, the proper characterization and modeling of aquifer are most important key factors to generate optimized development plan of gas reservoir. It is assumed that the strong edge aquifer exists in the northwest of the north block of Abadi, which is planned to be developed as the 1st stage development. In case this aquifer is weaker than expected, the final recovery of this block is expected to be –Prolonged due to delayed water breakthrough. There is no core and log data of this aquifer since no wells have been drilled in the aquifer area in the north block. The seismic data suggests no deterioration of the property of aquifer area. However the core and log data of the aquifer in the south block shows lower porosity and permeability caused by diagenesis. Unfortunately it is not certain that this deterioration of the south block in the aquifer - originated by the formation water, or by the differences of the property of the sand between the north block and the south block. Consequently property of aquifer in the north block is one of the biggest uncertainties since wide range of assumption of aquifer characteristic is possible. Multidisciplinary work has been conducted with geologists to predict an aquifer extension, volume and permeability. Porosity deterioration due to the compaction caused by the burden stress, and the diagenesis effect were considered. Numerical aquifer with multi cells and analytical aquifer have been tested to find the proper aquifer modeling. The simulation study has been conducted with this aquifer model to see the sensitivity of aquifer volume, aquifer permeability, possible fault compartmentalization and residual gas saturation. It is revealed that the deterioration of aquifer permeability has the biggest impact on the recovery. * INPEX The data gathering is planned to collect the information of the aquifer of the north block by direct measurements during the coming next delineation campaign since property of the aquifer, especially permeability, will narrow the uncertainty of the aquifer strength.
