Petroleum exploration comprises a many faceted activity. It is a complex mix of science and technology, operating in a complex economic and political matrix. I will review some of the basic aspects of petroleum geology, economics and politics which influence this world-wide activity, I hope that such a review may be of some value to some of you, especially in viewing exploration in the context of changing world supplies and demand for petroleum.
