Unocal Indonesia Ltd has been using a top drive system for development drilling operations since 1986.A study was conducted of top drive vs. kelly-rotary system performance in Unocal Indonesias offshore East Kalimantan operations area.This paper indentifies the advantages of using a top drive system in Unocals drilling operations, Offshore East Kalimantan, Indonesia. It illustrates that utilizing a top drive system has resulted in better drilling performance and significant time and cost savings as compared to a kelly-rotary drilling system.
