Very fine Scale geological Modelling, Trick or Treat?
Year: 2010
Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 34th Ann. Conv., 2010
The development at the School of Petroleum Engineering at UNSW of technology allows the creation of billion cell geological models on laptops. This will allow a massive increase in resolution so that models could have seismic resolution laterally, 12.5m, and well log resolution vertically 10cm. Is this level of detail necessary or are we going to model at this scale simply because we can? This paper discusses the availability of ultra-dense modelling solutions and the problems that have had to be overcome to develop these solutions. It discusses their place in the context of current workflows and suggests possible future workflows. Emphasis is placed on the possible benefits of this technology to improved asset management through the ability to make better decisions.
