Kenali Asam is the largest oil field in the Jambi Area and was discovered by NIAM (Nederlandsh Indische Aardolie Maatschappij) in 1931. The Kenali Asam field has 15 productive oil reservoirs with cumulative oil production to January 1, 1993 was 23.6 percent of the original oil in place.An Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) Contract was signed on January 26,1990 which resulted in the formation of the Pertamina-Asamera (Jambi EOR) Limited Joint Operating Body (JOB). A pilot waterflood was immediately initiated in one of the five major productive reservoirs. One data acquisition well was drilled as part of the pilot waterflood. Based on a comprehensive engineering study and pilot performance, commerciality for a full field waterflood development was granted on February 10, 1992. The JOB assumed operatorship of the Kenali Asam field on March 10, 1992. The full field development will include the implementation of waterfloods in five reservoirs and will result in incremental oil recovery of 14.7 MMSTB.This paper discusses the strategy, the problems encountered, and the current results of the waterflood development project in the Kenali Asam field.
