“Eat What We Grow, Grow What We Eat”: Creating a Self-Reliant Community Through Agricultural Programs

The paper discusses the role of corporate social responsibility in sustainable development for local communities in operation area of Eni Muara Bakau (Eni) at how the company supports local socio-economic development in an independent and sustainable way. Apart from the natural richness, this initiative was triggered by the high expectation of local communities to work in the company, which requires specific competencies due to its high cost, risk, and technology. The study was conducted at Joglo Tani Kolong Langit in Handil Baru, East Kalimantan, and emphasizing Joglo Tani Kolong Langit as part of Eni sustainability programs in collaboration with local government and communities which aimed to increase the local economic level by creating opportunities based on their farming skills while reducing their dependency to the company; support local communities through the construction of agricultural center that initiate farming methods for small landholdings to reap economic advantage; maximize the use of uncultivated and non-productive lands to ensure environmental sustainability with the philosophy �eat what we grow, grow what we eat.� This study suggests the initiative that has been designed through a consolidation and coordination processes by involving multi-stakeholder participative method at the early stage has resulted to the creation of economic values and positive impacts (benefits) which lead to a self-reliant community. Such benefits namely: the declining trend of local demand to work at the company; more than 50 families involved in the cultivation of their primary food requirements with the immediate benefit of saving up to 100-200 USD per month per family; the group has started to produce their organic fertilizers and successfully reap more economic value by selling the fertilizer. On the other hand, the women have been involved in the processing of farming products to create items with higher value added, such as sweets made of fruits, crackers made of vegetable, etc. Furthermore, the Joglo Tani Kolong Langit has started to broaden its function to become food storehouse, seed garden, multi-function structure and agro-tourism center.
