Good bonding of the cement to pipe and cement to formation is essential for effective zonal isolation. The problem of bad primary cementing to seal the casing hole annulus and prevent communication between fluid producing formations in producing wells, either gas or oil, and injection wells is evident. Poor bonding may limit the desired production and stimulation techniques of the wells. The introduction of thixotropic cement has shown a remarkable improvement in bonding on many different types of wells. Thixotropic cement slurries can also be used on wells where lost circulation has been encountered. This paper will discuss the formulation of a Thixotropic cement system and implementation of good primary cementing techniques to improve cement bonding. The work is based on a review of previous unsatisfactory cement jobs. Laboratory test results of Thixotropic slurries formulated with Indonesian manufactured cement will also be presented.Case histories, cement bond logs, previous primary cement slurries, used in South and Central Sumatra will also he presented and discussed.
