A comparative study is made of various post stack techniques used to attenuate coherent and random noise in processing of multi-azimuth 3-D seismic surveys. Subsets of two 3-D surveys acquired in Indonesia are studied to compare the various aspects and consequences of noise attenuation techniques. Strategies for attenuating both random and coherent noise are studied. Predictive filtering in the f-x (frequency - space) domain for random noise suppression may be applied post stack as either a double two dimensional (2-D by 2-D) process (inline and crossline) or using a three dimensional predictive filtering routine (f-xy) which operates simultaneously over a group of inline and crossline seismic traces. f-k (frequency-wavenumber) filters that are designed to attenuate linear coherent noise may be applied using concatenated 2-D by 2-D filters provided that the resulting attenuation of noise is isotropic (independent of azimuth). The combination of these two techniques to suppress coherent and linear noise is evaluated. The results indicate that f-xy filtering is an extremely robust process for attenuating random noise as well as linear noise that is ",non predictable", over the three - dimensional predictive space. Application of f-xy filtering as the initial post stack process has advantages over the reverse order of application (f-k prior to f-xy) when significant amounts of both coherent linear noise and random noise are present.
