A Wide Detailed Geophysical Survey Of Offshore Makassar Strait
Year: 2012
Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 36th Ann. Conv., 2012
Eni Indonesia is planning an Oil & Gas field development offshore Indonesia, within the Jangkrik field, located in the Makassar Strait, East of Kalimantan Island and in the Kutei Basin. The area is about 60-70km off the shoreline and will be connected to the shore by a rigid export trunk line in a water depth of maximum 100 meters. The field itself will be off the continental shelf limit, at about 150m water depth, to about 450m depth along the slope that extends towards water depths in excess of 1000m. The flat portion of the seabed, from the shoreline to the edge of the continental shelf, evidences the presence of a distributed array of pockmarks, coral outcrops and local faults associated with gas chimneys and seabed depressions. Near the edge, large channels are evident, most probably as a consequence of the past variation of the sea level. The edge of the continental shelf initially presents a steep scarp, about 50-100m high, from which a slope starts extending to 1000m and more water depth, it presents arc-like features, indicating past failures of the facing that produced the drop of material that is confirmed by groups of isolated blocks found along the deeper slope. Below, along the continental slope, a sequence of layers with different reflectivity, large surface channels, as well as traces of turbidite and contourite currents, were found. Listric faults were discovered, associated with the variable steepness of the seabed. Due to the complex environment above described, Eni Indonesia executed in late 2011 a wide and detailed geophysical survey across all the area, adopting the * ENI E&P ** ENI Indonesia most sophisticated and up-to-date bathymetric and scanning technologies. Aim of the survey was to give all the elements to input for a detailed design of the subsea structures and flow lines.
