The discoveries of large quantities of natural gas in Indonesian waters, remote from major markets have led to the development of a healthy LNG industry. However the growth in LNG consumption is limited by the rate of growth of the economies of the major consumers and substantial reserves of gas remain undeveloped. Alternative outlets would be beneficial to the Indonesian economy and one of these is conversion of natural gas to high value, transportable, liquid fuels. In recent years there has been considerable research into this technology and plants have already been built. Syntroleum have further developed the process to a compact simplified form suitable for mounting on a floating production system.
