Application of the nuclear magnetism log and electromagnetic propagation tool to define steam potential in heavy oil reservoirs

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 12th Ann. Conv., 1983

The Nuclear Magnetism Log (NML) indicates the portion of fluids in sandstones that are free to flow. The basis for NML measurements are reviewed and one application is discussed in detail: the NML can be used to distinguish producible water from heavy oil where water is too fresh for resistivity log interpretation. When the NML results are combined with saturations calculated from the Electromagnetic Propagation Tool (EPT), zones which will produce oil in response to steam can be recognized. The technique is useful in reservoirs which have heavy oil and fresh water. The logs used together can determine which zones contain oil and which oilbearing zones also contain mobile water.
