In 2006, Indonesia experienced 55 positive cases of Avian Influenza with 45 fatalities, the known cases in the world were 115 positive cases with 79 fatalities. In 2007, Indonesia reported 42 positive cases, 37 of them fatal, total for the world in the same year was 86 positive cases (59 fatalities). Cumulatively, there have been 124 cases (101 fatalities) diagnosed in Indonesia, the world total being 357 cases with 224 fatalities. Thirty-five percent of all Avian Influenza (AI) cases and 45 percent of AI fatalities have occurred in Indonesia.Based on the strong implications of the data, Total Indonesie (TI) decided it should formulate a plan to cope with a possible AI pandemic in Indonesia. Of necessity, any such plan must adhere to National and Local Authorities, the World Health Organization (WHO), and TI Head Quarter guidelines and recommendations. With the AI Pandemic Preparedness Plan (PPP), TI is preparing to address all aspects of threat, particularly the “trigger points as defined by WHO, the distribution of information to employees and dependents, the coordination among all stakeholders, the implementation of door screening, seasonal flu vaccinations, stockpiling of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and antiviral drugs, the allocation of isolation rooms, and plans for pandemic drills.TI has already been proactively involved in the actual situations, when suspected cases have occurred in town. TI resources, in coordination with local authorities, have been used and appreciated.
