Balancing cross-section and sandbox modeling of Satui fold-thrust-belt, Asem-Asem basin, South Kalimantan

Satui fold-thrust-belt is located in the eastern part of the Meratus Mountain separated Barito Basin to the west with Asem-Asem basin to the east. This belt is a NW-SE trending linear features which mainly consist of folded and thrusted sandstone, shale and coals of lower Tanjung Formation. The deformation style from fieldworks is characterized by various types and sizes of folds including symmetrical, asymmetrical, chevron and box bounded by low- to high-angle thrust faults system. This paper demonstrates the result of integration detailed geological fieldworks, balancing crosssection and sandbox modeling in the evaluation of mechanism and evolution of the thin skinned foldthrust- belt.Fieldworks were concentrated in generating series of detailed cross-section which will use for reconstructing structures evolution using balancing cross-section techniques. Structures style developed in the study area can be classified as fault-bend-fold with trailing imbricated type. The tectonic transport or shortening direction which control the formation of the fold belt is NE-SW occurred during late Miocene deformation related to the major uplift of the Meratus Mountain. Backthrust was developed in association with the development of the main thrust. The result of 2D balancing cross-sections indicated more than 24% shortening have been occurred in the area. Sandbox modeling results indicated that rheology representing by various sand size, thickness of the sand packages and pre-existing structures are the major variables controlling the shapes and styles of the deformation. It clearly show that evolution of thin skinned fold-thrust-belt will strongly influence to the development of associated structural traps in particular in relation to trap integrity issues.
