This paper summarizes the most important results of a field campaign carried out by Lemigas in 1972 in South West Java. It consisted of geological mapping in the Hondje, Pelabuanratu and Sukabumi areas and in surveying detailed lithological sections across all the structural units in the area. This geological work was supplemented by a reconnaissance gravity survey. Datation of the numerous formations and members, chiefly using planktonic and larger foraminifera, permitted to establish fairly accurate stratigraphic correlations in this region.This work, combined with a compilation of published and unpublished reports, resulted in new stratigraphic data and complementary structural information on several geological units in South West Java.The studied area is 180 km long and covers a surface of about 6.900 sq. km. Its northern limit can be figured as a line which runs from Sukabumi in the East, passes Cibadak and the Halimun volcanoes and reaches the Sunda strait in the West at the bay of Labuan. The eastern boundary corresponds to the meridian of Sukabumi. This area extends westwards to the Ujung Kulon and is bordered to the South by the Indian Ocean.The authors thank the management of LEMIGAS and PERTAMINA for permission to publish this paper.
