The Jatibarang oil field is geographically located in paddy fields and villages with dense population. This necessitates a design incorporating well clustering and directional drilling. Subsurface conditions in the Jatibarang area specifically and West Java in general are characterized by sub normal pressure as an anomaly. These problems, including also mud losses, gas kicks and cementing procedures require the design of special drilling and completion methods. This paper describes the drilling operation which has taken into account all the mentioned problems together with operational safety and cost.
