Disaster awareness education in the school as model for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) around geological hazard prone area

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 35th Ann. Conv., 2011

With the increasing threat of geological disaster recently in Indonesia, it is important that all stakeholders including school communities have reasonable understanding on disaster response. School communities generally have twofold problem, limited disaster education opportunities and limited information or knowledge. This could imply a low level of disaster awareness. Meanwhile, business enterprise (i.e. oil & gas companies, consultants, etc.) has mandatory activity by regulation to perform Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). This paper aimed to examine the knowledge on disaster response and to highlight the needs to introduce earth science for school communities as a model for CSR activities. This was done by exploring three areas: (i) disaster education, (ii) respond to disaster event, (iii) knowledge of earth science. The study since 2006 has targeted on elementary to senior high schools in several places, which located on the earthquake hazard and tsunami prone areas that experienced and potential areas of geological disaster in the future. Several schools around the coastline of Indian Ocean of Sumatera, Java, Bali & Lombok islands had been visited. Teaching materials (posters and pamphlets) were distributed then presentation and short drama were performed in the classroom to measure understanding of the contents.Result showed that disaster awareness were generally out of the curriculum. This might be due to limited knowledge of teachers who manage the curriculum development. For the respond to disaster event, most of participants are unaware what to do when disaster happens. We also found that our visit had increased the curiosity of students and teachers to learn more about these disasters. This result suggest that dissemination of entry level of earth science is deeply needed, since there is no such subject (especially geology) in school level in Indonesia. Thus, this kind of activity can become a model for Corporate Social Responsibility related with disaster risk reduction in Indonesia. Keywords: Disaster Awareness, Earthquake, Tsunami, Disaster Risk Reduction
