Dispersants have a role in the cleanup of oil spills. There are situations where disperkants can be used for the benefit of our natural resources, but there are also instances where they should not be used. Similarly, there are conditions under which they are effective, as well as limits where they become ineffective.The generic types of surface active agents as well as the solvents used for dissolving these compounds will determine the effectiveness and toxicity of the dispersants. In addition, the types of spilled oil will also influence the effectiveness of dispersants. The present paper discusses the effectiveness and toxicity of some dispersants available to use in Indonesia and try to correlate these two properties.
