Shortages of domestic fuel oil and natural gas have caused refiners in the U.S. to reassess their conservation practices. The impact of higher energy costs on the process design of new or modeernized refinery and chemical facilities is expected to be significant. Old guidelines for furnace efficiency, heat exchanger temperature approach and insulation thickness are no longer adequate. Combined power cycles, heat pumps, power recovery systems and cogeneration are the ",buzzwords", of the day. This paper reviews current practice and provides some specific examples of savings attainable by unconventional process design technique which may become more conventional in the future.
