The use of production logs in oil/gas wells provides valuable information to determine the contribution intervals and the productivity of each interval. In the fracture basement reservoir, determining the contribution interval remains a challenge. In general, the determination is based mainly on the information from drilling loss and the interpreted fault depth from the seismic, which are qualitative and rough estimates of the fault damage zone that contributes to flow. Spinner-based production logs are the most common method to interpret producing intervals but have several drawbacks that make them not always applicable in the following conditions: 1. High-angle trajectory and big bore size that could lead to an apparent down flow phenomenon; and 2. Rough and erratic wellbore surface of open hole completion which creates uncertainties and complicates interpretation, etc. An alternative method to spinners is the application of temperature logs. In recent years temperature logs have demonstrated that it can be a more suitable tool for running in fracture basement reservoirs because it can overcome potential problems with the wellbore environment, completion types, and produced fluids. The temperature derivative can be used to extract the information about sink/source at the wellbore, while the thermal modeling is used to quantify the flow. This paper describes the methodology used for the interpretation of temperature logs and highlights the capabilities that enable the user to dig deeper and gain a better understanding of the production intervals and quantify the contribution of each interval. The results are used to optimize field production with optimizations such as water shut-off, additional perforations, or further use for the drilling strategy to determine the landing depth of an infill well or may be widely used as an analog for exploration wells of similar fractured basement reservoirs.
