Explore New Insights in Mature Basin Using Play Based Exploration and Common Risk Segment Map: A Case Study of Sunda Basin, Indonesia
Year: 2018
Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 42nd Ann. Conv., 2018
The importance of finding remaining potential in a mature basin has always been a challenging subject. Many surveys have been done, many wells have been drilled and many prospects have been tested makes most of the people believe that only very limited hydrocarbon remains for that play/basin. Here, we demonstrated by reevaluating mature basins using Play Based Exploration (PBE) and Common Risk Segment (CRS) can reveal remaining potential plays even in the very mature play. Our case study is Baturaja Play of Sunda Basin, Indonesia. Migration of hydrocarbon, facies distribution of reservoir, thickness of seal rock, and structure trap of the upper and lower Baturaja Formation in Sunda Basin are being delineated and scored using Spatial Analyst Tool to highlight and quantify remaining potentials of this very mature basin. The evaluation is conducted using published data of Sunda Basin since the start of exploration and exploitation around 1960. The result of the evaluation is a composite CRS map of trap, reservoir, seal, and migration of Upper and Lower Baturaja Formation. The composite CRS map shows that all of the proven fields are located within prospective area. However, there are still lots of possible prospective area for future fields in Sunda Basin. Therefore, our study revealed that even the most mature basin with the most mature play still interesting to be evaluated as there are possibilities for sweet spots to be found.
