External Casing Packer (ECP) Installation on Cased Hole at Heavy Loss Zone

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 41st Ann. Conv., 2017

This paper reviews the feasibility study and installation of an uncommon packer as annulus tubing isolation use multivalve system ECP (External Casing Packer) applications at a heavy losses zone. Challenges related to Hydraulic Workover Unit include the following, nature limitations, the heavy loss zone because the well cannot be considered dead, the job design, 7” TRSSV restriction ID’s, length of ECP, set and inflate ECP at heavy loss formation, etc. The complex operation of the ECP Installation is reviewed in this paper. Running completion at massive losses can be very challenging and in this case the well cannot be killed, and while several attempts to pump LCM resulted in slight curing losses, further monitoring of tubing head pressure with a different pumping rate was established to gather information on well behavior. The operation to set and inflate ECP’s was another challenge to set the packer due to heavy losses zone. After all of these challenges were reviewed, problems were better understood, the procedures are better communicated and it is believed that the ECP is applicable as annulus tubing isolation if used properly. Keywords: Carbonate formation, Heavy loss zone, 7” subsurface safety valve, Space limitation, External casing packer (ECP), Inflation fluid, Liquid hold up, Capillary string, Hydraulic workover unit.
