Geological data acquisition during 3D seismic operation in Mutiara field area, Kalimantan, Indonesia

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 26th Ann. Conv., 1998

The area around the Mutiara Field is being explored for stratigraphic traps. VICO Indonesia has used the acquisition of the onshore 3D seismic survey in the area as an opportunity to acquire data from the shotholes and traverses to provide information about the geology and hydrocarbon trapping mechanisms. The data are in the form of 2049 shothole mudlogs, 417 shothole wireline-logs, 216 km mapped surface traverses, and 15 detailed outcrop sedimentological description. Trap types and mechanisms have been developed that may be applicable in the deeper subsurface. The mudlogs and wireline logs acquired from the seismic shotholes have been utilized to reconstruct 11 dip-line and 4 crestal cross-sections depicting shallow subsurface correlation of Mutiara and Pamaguan areas which can be used to help calibrate the seismic sections. Several flooding surfaces have been identified both in the cross sections and surface maps, and they correlate with flooding surfaces interpreted from Mutiara deep-well log data. Significant markers (flooding surfaces, sequence boundaries) at outcrop and shallow subsurface can now be integrated into the overall results of the Mutiara 3D seismic interpretations. The sedimentological study of the outcrops has also resulted in increased understandings of the paleogeography in certain intervals, based on facies reconstruction and paleo-current measurements. These will be incorporated and used as analogs for subsurface reservoir characterization, both in Mutiara- Pamaguan fields and surrounding areas.
